Overview
Goldman Sachs Gives, established in 2007, is a donor-advised fund available to partners and former partners of the firm. The program is a public charity that maintains individual donor accounts from which donors can recommend grants to qualified charitable organizations.
Goldman Sachs Gives is an important part of the firm's tradition of philanthropy, which is based, in large measure, on the involvement of our people in the not-for-profit sector. As part of the firm's 2009 full year earnings announcement, Goldman Sachs announced a $500 million charitable contribution to Goldman Sachs Gives from partner compensation. This expansion of Goldman Sachs Gives reinforces the firm's commitment to philanthropy through diversified and impactful giving at a time when not-for-profits need it most.
The firm's partners provide recommendations for not-for-profit organizations that may receive donations. The recommendations of our partners will help to ensure that we invest in a diverse group of charities that will improve the lives of people in communities where we work and live.
The program focuses on underserved communities, directing grants to one of four thematic pillars:
- Building & Stabilizing Communities
- Increasing Educational Opportunities
- Creating Jobs & Economic Growth
- Honoring Service & Veterans
Goldman Sachs Gives also promotes donor coordination. Goldman Sachs Gives is structured as a donor-advised fund allowing individuals to increase their impact by coordinating their efforts. The Office of Corporate Engagement sources philanthropic opportunities for the partnership and facilitates partner giving.
The program supports alliance-building and collaboration. Goldman Sachs Gives encourages alliance-building between non profit organizations and private and public entities. By bringing together organizations, companies, individuals, and public agencies, Goldman Sachs Gives is creating a new model of collaboration and acting as a catalyst for large-scale change.
The program also encourages innovative and high-impact giving. Goldman Sachs Gives is redefining excellence among donor-advised funds by administering a best-in-class program centered on an innovative model of philanthropy.
