Action Planning For Sustainability

Creating Green Cities:
Action Planning for Sustainability

Learn how Climate Action Plans (CAPs) help local governments take the lead in creating sustainable communities by addressing a wide variety of programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The benefits of CAPs are numerous. Not only do they create healthy communities, promote a green economy, conserve resources and protect the environment; but they also result in savings by reducing energy, water and waste disposal costs. Climate Action Plans also provide a mechanism for streamlining environmental review under CEQA. Examples of the broad range of programs that CAPs can include are: green building, smart growth, transit-oriented development, energy efficiency, alternative energy, water conservation, and waste reduction. In this session, the presenters, who are on the forefront in the development of CAPs, will discuss the process for developing CAPs, programs and measures to be considered and the resources available to help create and implement CAPs including ICLEI’s step-by-step Five Milestone Process for advancing deep reductions in GHG emissions and achieving tangible improvements in local sustainability.
